Well, let me tell ya, there’s this thing called a “coalburner,” and it’s been talked about in all kinds of ways. Now, if ya thinkin’ it’s just some fancy new machine, well, you’re partly right. But there’s a whole lot more to it, depending on how folks use the word. So let me start from the top and break it down for ya.
First thing you should know is, a coalburner, or coal burner, can just be a regular ol’ machine that burns coal to make heat. You know, back in the day, we used to have to shovel that coal into stoves to keep the house warm during winter. That’s a coalburner’s job, burnin’ coal to make fire. Nothing too complicated there, is it? The coal gets ground down real fine, like dust, and then it burns hot to keep things nice and toasty.
Now, this here word’s been used a little differently too. Some folks, in their own not-so-nice way, use “coalburner” to talk about a certain kind of person, usually a woman, who’s, well, got herself involved with people from other backgrounds, especially Black men. It ain’t a kind word, though, and it’s got a lot of hurt attached to it. People use it to try and shame folks for who they love, which I think is just plain wrong. People should love who they wanna love, don’t matter their skin color or where they come from.
But this word didn’t just pop up out of nowhere. Nah, it’s been around for quite a while. Some say it came from the idea that coal would keep a person warm, like a metaphor for what these folks thought was a woman needing warmth or something, in a way that ain’t exactly kind. It’s like a bunch of people started callin’ folks this name as a way to criticize them for their choices. It’s a real shame, really, when you think about it.
If you ask me, I think it’s high time folks stopped usin’ such hurtful terms. People, no matter where they come from or who they choose to love, deserve respect. And as for the machines that burn coal to keep the house warm in the winter, well, I reckon they do a good job. But these words, when used to hurt or shame people, sure don’t do nobody any good.
So, you see, the word “coalburner” has got a lot of baggage tied to it. It’s used for both the machines that help heat up our homes and, unfortunately, as a way to insult people. But just because a word has been around for a long time, don’t mean it should be used to hurt others. Some things just ain’t right, and this here’s one of ‘em.
In the end, maybe we should just stick to callin’ the machines what they are—coal burners—and stop usin’ the word to hurt folks. I mean, at the end of the day, whether it’s a machine or a person, we’re all just tryin’ to get by and make the best of things, ain’t we?
