Well, let me tell ya, there’s this big ol’ hole in the ground over in Russia, called the Mirny Diamond Mine. It’s a huge place, y’know, and it’s been diggin’ for diamonds since back in 1955. It’s real deep too, more than 500 meters deep! That’s like, almost as tall as a thousand-foot building, if you can imagine that. They call it one of the biggest open-pit mines in the whole world. Y’all can even see it from way up in the sky, it’s that big! The folks in Russia sure did make a big ol’ mess with this one, diggin’ down into the earth like they did. But they found a lot of diamonds, and that made ’em mighty rich, I reckon.
The mine’s in the Sakha Republic, up in Siberia, right near the Arctic Circle. You know it’s cold up there, right? The winters last for about seven months, and then the summer’s just a quick blur, when the ground turns all mushy. Bet that made it real tough for the workers. Imagine tryin’ to dig down in frozen earth half the year, and the rest of the time, you’re slippin’ and slidin’ in mud. But they didn’t stop. They kept diggin’ year after year, and sure enough, they struck it rich. They found a bunch of diamonds, and that made a whole new city grow up around the mine. Folks came from all over, lookin’ for work and a better life, I guess.
Now, the mine stopped its surface workin’ in 2001, but it ain’t completely closed. They started up again in 2009 and reckon they’ll keep it goin’ for another 50 years or so. But don’t go thinkin’ it’s all smooth sailin’, no sir. Back in 2017, the mine flooded again, and more than 140 miners got trapped down there. Thank God most of ‘em made it out, though only eight got stuck down there. That flood, well, it sure wasn’t the first accident. And if you’ve heard, they don’t let helicopters fly over the mine anymore after a few got sucked right down by the air currents. Not the safest place for sure, but it’s a big part of Russia’s diamond business.
The mine itself is really somethin’ to look at. It’s got a 1,200-meter wide hole at the top and goes real deep, like I said. Y’know, the mine is so big it can mess with the weather a little bit. But if you ever see a picture of it, it almost looks like an optical illusion, like it don’t belong in the world at all. But believe me, it’s real. And the diamonds they find there? They don’t just find a few. Russia’s got more diamonds in the ground than anywhere else, over 3.6 billion carats, they say. That’s a lot of diamonds for a country that’s cold and far away from most folks.
Folks in the town of Mirny, where the mine is, they all work for Alrosa, which is the big company runnin’ the show. They’ve been diggin’ these diamonds for years and years. I reckon the place is full of stories and history, just waitin’ for someone to come by and learn about it. Even if you don’t care much about diamonds, it’s somethin’ you gotta see. It’s just too big to ignore. The Mirny Diamond Mine, well, it’s a real place, and it’s got a real history, too. It ain’t somethin’ you can forget easily, that’s for sure.
