Oh, you wanna hear about them three big ol’ discs, eh? Well, lemme tell ya ’bout ’em. There’s this thing called “Trois Disques,” an art piece made by some fella named Alexander Calder. Now, I ain’t no fancy art scholar, but I know a thing or two ’bout what I see, and let me tell ya, this here sculpture ain’t somethin’ ya can just forget once you lay your eyes on it. It’s sittin’ right out there in Montreal, in a place called Parc Jean-Drapeau. Not far from that big ol’ metro station, if you ask me.
This Trois Disques thing is made up of three big ol’ round pieces, or discs, I reckon. They got these long, curvy legs holdin’ ’em up in the air. The legs are made outta stainless steel, though they ain’t all shiny and polished like you’d think. Nope, they’s left a little rough-like, which I guess gives it a real sturdy look, like it ain’t goin’ anywhere. These steel legs, they arch up and overlap one another in such a way, you’d think they were built for strength, or to hold something mighty important.
Now, I don’t know what kinda fancy thoughts went through this Calder fella’s head when he made this thing, but it sure does stand out. Them arches, they don’t just stand there all stiff and proper like some of them other sculptures you might see around. Nah, these arches look like they got some kinda life to ’em, like they’re reachin’ for the sky. And the whole thing sits on six slim poles, like they’s a bunch of beans stickin’ up out the ground. Ain’t that somethin’?
What’s real interestin’ about this piece, though, is where you can find it. It ain’t tucked away in some quiet little art gallery, nah. You gotta go to Montreal, to that big ol’ park—Parc Jean-Drapeau—and there it is, standin’ tall for all to see. This sculpture was part of that big ‘ol 1967 Expo they had there, and if you look around, you’ll see a few more pieces like it, though Trois Disques stands out the most, if ya ask me.
Folks don’t always realize how important these things are, ’cause they just see a bunch of steel sittin’ in a park. But you see, this piece of art, along with a few others from that Expo, is like a little piece of history. If it wasn’t for that Expo, a lotta folks wouldn’t even know about this place called Parc Jean-Drapeau, and maybe not even about Montreal itself! This sculpture has been there long enough now, it’s part of the city’s spirit, or so they say. Y’know, like those old barns and tractors back in the day that still remind us of where we came from.
So, if you ever find yourself in Montreal, and you’re lookin’ for somethin’ that’ll make ya scratch your head and say, “What in the world is that?”—you go on over to Parc Jean-Drapeau, and you’ll see this Trois Disques. Ain’t nothing too fancy, but it sure does make a statement. And don’t forget, it’s part of somethin’ real important, that Expo from ’67. A little bit of history mixed in with the art. Ain’t that somethin’ special?
