Well, let me tell ya about this big hole in the ground they call the Mirny mine over in Russia. It’s somethin’ real special, folks. They dug that hole right in the middle of Siberia, and let me tell you, Siberia ain’t no place for the faint of heart. The hole’s over 525 meters deep, that’s about 1,722 feet deep—pretty deep, ain’t it? And it’s got a wide mouth, ’bout 1,200 meters across. Now, that’s one big ol’ pit! They say it’s the fourth deepest mine in the whole wide world, and that’s no small feat.
This mine, they started it all back in 1955. The place they dug is called Mirny, named after a kimberlite pipe. Now, kimberlite—well, that’s a kind of rock that holds diamonds. So, you can imagine, they went diggin’ deep in hopes of findin’ shiny rocks down there. And wouldn’t ya know it, they did. They hit the jackpot! The mine became famous, and over the years, it helped build up a whole town around it. Mirny’s got about 40,000 folks livin’ there, and most of ‘em workin’ for this big company called Alrosa that runs the mine. I tell ya, it’s a tough life up there, but they got work, and that’s a blessing.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ that all’s well and good though. This ain’t no easy work. This place has seen its fair share of problems. Production stopped in 2001, and then the mine closed in 2004. But they weren’t about to give up on it. No sir! They went and recommissioned the mine in 2009, and it looks like it’ll keep goin’ for another 50 years. That’s what they say, anyhow. It’s still got plenty of diamonds down there, so I reckon it’s worth it.
But it ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. In 2017, that mine flooded again, trapping over 140 miners. Now, that’s a real bad day at work. They managed to get most of ‘em out, though. Only eight miners had to stay behind. It’s a real risky business workin’ in a hole that deep, but folks still keep on goin’ in there. The mine’s big enough to swallow up small planes and helicopters, they say. Just imagine that, a big ol’ pit that could suck up a plane!
What’s even crazier is the whole place is so big, it could be seen from space! Now, that’s somethin’ to be proud of, isn’t it? I don’t know about you, but I think that’s mighty impressive. This mine is so deep and wide that it’s one of the largest human-made holes in the world. It’s a wonder to behold, and some folks say it even looks like a giant spaceship when you look at it from above.
So, if you ever find yourself up in the cold, snowy parts of Russia, and you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to see, you might wanna take a trip to the Mirny mine. But don’t go too close, now! That hole is mighty dangerous. And besides, you don’t want to end up like those poor souls who got stuck down there. Just be careful, and maybe keep your eyes on the sky too—don’t want to get sucked in by accident!
