How it all started

Back in 1955, some smart Soviet folks – geologists, they called ’em – discovered that there were diamonds buried deep under the ground there. A man named Yuri Khabardin and his team found them, and I reckon they didn’t know what a big deal it was gonna be! Soon enough, the place started to buzz with activity, and they began workin’ on diggin’ up them shiny stones.

It wasn’t easy, though. Siberia’s weather, well, it’s mean. They got winters that last nearly seven months, where everything freezes up tighter than a drum. And when summer comes, it ain’t much better—everything turns to mud and slush. So, folks had to build stuff high up on stilts just to keep the buildings from sinkin’ into the swampy ground.

Well, I can tell ya, this Mirny mine ain’t your average little hole in the ground. It’s a huge pit, and it takes a lot of folks to run it. At its peak, the place was home to a lot of workers. They had about 40,000 people living in the nearby town of Mirny, and most of ’em worked in the mine. It was a real lifeline for the community. The mine was open for a long time – for 44 years, in fact, before they closed it up in 2001. But, don’t go thinkin’ it’s all shut down for good—oh no, in 2009, they started diggin’ again. They reckon it’ll keep goin’ for another 50 years or more!

In fact, they say Russia’s got some of the largest diamond deposits in the world, all thanks to mines like this one. And all them shiny diamonds come from kimberlite pipes, deep shafts in the earth that bring up all sorts of goodies—like diamonds. These pipes, like the one at Mirny, are a real treasure trove, and they’ve been diggin’ ’em up for decades.

A close call at the mine

But it ain’t always been smooth sailing at the Mirny mine. Back in 2017, the place flooded, and there was a real scare. Over 140 miners got stuck underground, and it was a big ol’ mess. But, thank goodness, most of ’em were saved—only eight lost their lives. It was a tough time for everyone, but that’s the kind of danger you face when you work deep under the earth.

Now, the town of Mirny is something else, too. It’s small, but it’s got a big heart. The town grew up right around the mine, and a lot of folks live there because of it. The weather’s harsh, but people get by. Most of ’em work for a big company called Alrosa, which is the biggest diamond miner in Russia. They’ve got their headquarters there, right in the middle of it all. There’s a real sense of pride in that town, and they’re used to the cold and the hard work that comes with it.
