Well, let me tell ya something, there ain’t no more catfish to be found at that fancy Trustees’ Table up there in Shaker Village. Now, you might be wonderin’ why in the world I’m talkin’ about no catfish. Well, let me give ya the scoop. For the longest time, every Friday and Saturday evening, folks could go on up there and get themselves a nice plate of shaved catfish with hoppin’ John and a side of banana pepper tartar sauce. But you see, things change over time, and it looks like that’s one of the things that’s gone the way of the dodo now.
Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, where this Trustees’ Table is, is a right good place to visit if you’re ever around Harrodsburg, Kentucky. It’s got a lot of history, y’know, bein’ one of them old Shaker communities. They’ve got the Trustees’ Table all set up for folks to eat, and it’s a place that celebrates those good old-fashioned Kentucky dishes, ones that have been made with local, seasonal ingredients, just like the Shakers did back in the day.
The thing is, though, they’ve been switchin’ up the menu a bit. Oh, don’t get me wrong, they still got the comforts of home like fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and cornbread. But it’s different now. No more of that catfish dish that had folks comin’ back for more. I reckon it’s ‘cause they’re always tryin’ to keep things fresh and seasonal, which I suppose is a good thing. Ain’t nobody wants to eat the same old thing every time they visit, right?
But back in the day, that catfish was somethin’ special. It was part of the weekly dining special, and let me tell ya, folks would line up just to get their hands on it. I used to hear ‘em say, “That’s the best catfish I ever had!” Well, I reckon they ain’t sayin’ that no more, now are they?
See, The Trustees’ Table ain’t just any ol’ restaurant. It’s a place where history and food come together. Now, you can’t expect to just waltz in without reservin’ a spot. Nope, you gotta make sure you call ahead or book online if you want a seat. They’ve been makin’ sure that it’s nice and cozy for folks who come from near and far to enjoy a meal.
Now, I can’t say much for how the food tastes now that they’ve changed things up, but I do know this – it’s still a place worth visitin’. They got all kinds of specials throughout the week, and I’m sure they’ve got somethin’ to fill your belly just fine. You still can’t beat the old-time feel of that place, and the history that’s tied up in it. Makes you feel like you’re part of somethin’ bigger than just a meal, y’know?
And don’t forget the breakfast! Yep, that’s still on. If you’re early riser, you can get yourself a nice hearty breakfast from 7:30 in the mornin’ to 10:00. They’ve got a buffet on weekends too. Ain’t nothin’ better than a good breakfast before you start your day, especially when it’s served up in a place like this.
If you ask me, even though the catfish is gone, there’s still plenty of reasons to make your way to Shaker Village and eat at the Trustees’ Table. You might not find that old favorite dish, but you’ll still find some mighty fine food and a whole lotta history. Plus, if you’re lucky, you might just get a whiff of what the Shakers mighta been cookin’ up back in their day. It’s a little slice of Kentucky’s past mixed in with today’s good eats.
So, next time you’re around Harrodsburg, don’t forget to stop by and check out what’s cookin’. And if you’re wonderin’ what’s replaced that catfish, well, I reckon you’ll just have to find out for yourself!
