Well, now, ya hear about that Beryl comin’ our way, don’t ya? It’s a big ol’ storm, and it ain’t playin’ around, so we gotta be ready. Whether or not you’re right in the middle of it, y’all better prepare. I’m tellin’ ya, better safe than sorry, I say. The last thing you want is to be caught with your britches down when that wind starts howlin’ and rain pourin’ down like there’s no tomorrow.
Now, first thing you need to do is get your emergency kit together. I ain’t talkin’ about just a little bit of water and some crackers, no ma’am. You need to think bigger. Get yourself some cans of food that can last a while – beans, soup, stuff like that. If you got pets, don’t forget ‘em either! You gotta have food and water for them critters too. And make sure you got flashlights, batteries, and anything else you might need in the dark when the power goes out. You don’t wanna be fumble-fingering around for candles, trust me on that one.
Then, you gotta think about where you’re gonna go if that storm starts messin’ with ya. Ya gotta have an evacuation plan. Ain’t no time to be figurin’ out where you’re gonna go if things start to get real bad. Talk to your family and friends ahead of time and decide where you’ll meet if you all get split up. And make sure you know the safest route to get there. You never know what the roads are gonna look like, especially after a storm. It’s best to be ready.
Now, ya best be checkin’ that roof and all around your house too. You don’t want no dead branches fallin’ on your house when the wind picks up, so get out there and trim ‘em up if you need to. And don’t forget about your gutters! Clean ’em out, so the rain can drain proper. I seen too many folks havin’ leaks ‘cause they didn’t bother cleanin’ ‘em out, and then they’re callin’ for help at the last minute.
Speaking of wind, ya might have some stuff sittin’ around outside that could turn into a missile once that wind picks up. Anything loose, like lawn chairs, bikes, or them trampolines some folks like to leave outside – you need to tie them down or put ’em away. Don’t be lettin’ them turn into a hazard for ya or your neighbors. It’s just good sense.
Now, let’s talk about those doors and windows. You gotta batten down the hatches, as they say. If you got shutters, use ’em. If not, find some plywood and cover those windows. You don’t want no glass flyin’ around when that storm hits. And keep those doors closed tight, too. I don’t care if it’s hot inside, keep ‘em closed. That roof’s gotta stay on, ya know? The wind’ll tear at anything it can, so you gotta keep the house as sealed up as possible.
Oh, and make sure you got a way to stay updated on the storm. I don’t care if you gotta get a battery-powered radio or use your phone, but you need to know what that storm’s doin’. The last thing you want is to be sittin’ there all calm and then find out the storm’s right on top of you. Keep track of the news and make sure you know when it’s time to move.
So, y’all, don’t wait till the last minute. Get ready now, before it’s too late. You never know how fast things can change when it comes to these storms. And remember, it ain’t just about you – it’s about your family, your neighbors, and anyone else who might need help. Look out for each other, and we’ll all get through this just fine. Stay safe, ya hear?
