Well now, when we start talkin’ ’bout how much gold is left to mine, there’s somethin’ folks gotta understand right off the bat. Gold ain’t just sittin’ there all nice and easy for us to scoop up like potatoes from the ground. No, sir, it’s buried deep down in the Earth, and how much is left to dig out depends on a whole lotta things.
Now, I heard from some people who know their numbers that as of 2023, the world’s total stock of gold that’s already been pulled outta the ground is sittin’ at ’round 212,582 tonnes. That’s a big ol’ pile of gold if you ask me, but don’t get too comfortable thinkin’ that’s all there is. Nope, there’s still more gold left down below just waitin’ for us to get it, though it ain’t easy to get to. According to the World Gold Council, there’s still ’bout 54,000 tonnes of gold stuck under the earth, and it’s just a matter of time before we get it out – if we can.
Now, to make it all clearer, let me put it like this: if we take that 54,000 tonnes of gold and add it to what we’ve already mined, we’d end up with a total of 244,040 tonnes. That sounds like a lot, don’t it? But here’s the thing, that’s just what we think is out there. Them numbers ain’t perfect, no sir. Ain’t no way to know for sure ‘cause the earth is a tricky thing. And on top of that, gold’s a funny thing—just ’cause it’s in the ground don’t mean we can get to it all easy like. Some of it might be buried so deep or be in places so hard to reach that it ain’t worth the trouble to dig it up. It’s just too expensive.
But even if we manage to get all that gold out, that still don’t mean the world’s gonna run outta gold anytime soon. Gold’s a special metal, see, it don’t rust or rot or go bad like other stuff. If we keep recyclin’ it, we can keep usin’ it over and over again, so the amount that’s left in the ground might not matter as much in the long run. It’s like a never-ending cycle. Every bit of gold that’s been used, like in old jewelry or electronics, can be melted down and used again. Some folks say we got more gold sittin’ around in jewelry boxes, watchbands, and phones than what’s left in the Earth.
Now, I ain’t sayin’ gold’s gonna last forever, but with the way we recycle it, we might just keep on using the same gold over and over until we figure out how to get all the rest outta the ground. ‘Course, whether that’s a good thing or not depends on who you ask. Some people say we’ll run out of gold in the next few hundred years, but others think we got plenty to last as long as we need it. The truth is, we don’t really know for sure.
So, where does all this gold come from, you might be wonderin’? Well, most of it comes from mines deep underground, but some’s been pulled outta rivers or from the earth’s crust. We’ve been diggin’ up gold for thousands of years, and every year, we find more places to dig. In fact, in 2022 alone, about 3,000 tonnes of gold were pulled outta the earth. Now, that might seem like a lot, but when you compare it to the 54,000 tonnes that are still out there, it don’t sound so much anymore, does it?
What folks need to understand is that while we might be runnin’ low on easy-to-reach gold, there’s still plenty left down there. If technology keeps gettin’ better, maybe we’ll find ways to dig it up cheaper and faster. But until then, we’ll just have to keep on diggin’ and recycling, ‘cause that’s how the gold game works these days.
So how much gold is left to mine, you ask? Well, depending on who you listen to, there’s somewhere around 54,000 tonnes still waiting down below the surface. It’s gonna take some serious work to get it out, but it’s there, folks. And who knows, with new methods and better tools, we might just be able to get even more than that.
