Well, ya see, the mineral that’s mined for its iron content is called hematite. Now, this ain’t no newfangled thing, it’s been around forever. Hematite’s one of them minerals that’s got a lotta iron in it, about 70% iron, and that makes it mighty important. It’s real common too, so it’s easy to get. Most of the iron folks use for things like making steel and such comes from hematite.
Hematite’s a heavy, reddish-brown to black mineral. When you look at it, you can usually tell it apart from others ‘cause of its color and how it streaks. It’s got this rusty kinda red streak when you scratch it on a piece of porcelain. This mineral comes from the Earth’s crust, and it’s mostly made up of iron oxide, which is just a fancy way of sayin’ it’s iron mixed with oxygen.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ that hematite’s the only mineral with iron in it. Nope, there’s others too like magnetite y limonite. But here’s the thing: hematite’s the big deal, ’cause it’s so much more common and easy to get than them others. Even in places like North America, most of the iron we use, like over 90%, comes from hematite. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to make all that steel we need for buildings, cars, and all that stuff we use every day.
Magnetite, which is another iron-rich mineral, is also important, but it’s not as easy to find or as widely used as hematite. It’s black and shiny, and it’s got a real strong magnetism, that’s why they call it magnetite. It’s got a bit less iron in it than hematite, but folks still dig it up ‘cause it’s useful for making iron too.
Hematite’s used in a whole bunch of ways, not just for iron. Some folks use it for pigments in paint, and even folks who believe in healing stones like to use hematite. But, the main thing it’s good for is being a source of iron. That iron goes into making steel, which, well, you know, is used for everything from bridges to cars to tools.
To get iron from hematite, folks mine it, and there’s different ways to do that. They might do it through open pit mining, where they just dig a big hole in the ground, or underground mining if the iron’s deeper down. Once they get the rock out, they blast it, crush it, and then run it through machines to separate the iron from the rest of the stuff. After that, the iron gets sent off to be made into steel and all the other stuff we need.

It’s not just the most common one, it’s also the one that gets used the most, thanks to its high iron content and how easy it is to find. If we didn’t have it, we’d be in a mighty big pickle.
