Hey, talking about them coal washeries, huh? Well, lemme tell ya, them places is where they clean up all that coal to make it good and ready for burning. Ain’t no use in hauling coal full of dirt and rocks, right? That’s just wastin’ good fuel. So, they set up these big ol’ plants, called coal washeries or sometimes coal prep plants. Here, they get rid of all the junk mixed up with the coal – like sand, stones, and who knows what else – so what’s left is the coal folks can actually use.
Ahora, un coal washery, it’s kinda like givin’ that coal a good bath. They gotta clean it real good, else it won’t burn proper in them power plants. First thing they do, they dump all that coal into big tanks. The light stuff floats and heavy stuff sinks – kinda like when ya wash yer veggies, right? Only they do it with coal!
But, it ain’t just about washing. They also crush them lumps of coal into different sizes after it’s clean. See, some machines burn smaller chunks better, some need bigger ones, so they sort it out real careful.
But here’s the catch – cleanin’ coal leaves behind a bunch of waste. All them rocks and dust, they call that washery rejects. Can’t really use it for anything, so it’s kinda a headache for folks who run these plants. Sometimes, they just pile it up somewhere, but that ain’t so good for the land neither. And, them rejects can still have some coal dust stuck in ’em, so it’s a bit wasteful too.
- Sorting coal sizes – They crush it, sift it, and end up with different sizes for different uses.
- Separating dirt and rocks – Light stuff floats, heavy stuff sinks, just like washing vegetables.
- Managing waste – What’s left over, they gotta find ways to handle, like them washery rejects.
Now, with all this cleaning and sorting, ya might wonder, why not just use the coal as it comes? Well, dirty coal ain’t no good for power plants. Them plants need good quality coal, else they’d make a mess with ash and smoke, even clog up the machines. Besides, nowadays, they got all these rules, specially here in India, that ya can’t burn high-ash coal. So, coal washery’s got to clean it up, else they can’t sell it proper.
When coal’s cleaner, it burns better and makes more electricity. And ya know, in India, we still rely on coal for most of our electricity. People may talk ’bout solar and wind, but coal’s still number one here. That’s why they need so many washeries. Without these, we’d be stuck with low-quality, dirty coal that ain’t worth burnin’.
And there’s somethin’ called froth flotation they use in them washeries too. Don’t ask me the details – it’s some fancy way to get tiny bits of coal separated out from the waste, like when ya try to scoop up oil from water. Anyway, this trick helps get every last bit of coal out, so they don’t waste nothin’.
But like I said, them washery rejects is a problem. Too much of it, and it starts pilling up. These rejects got ash, dust, and other bits that ain’t no good for burnin’. Some folks are tryin’ to find new ways to use that waste, but it’s tough. Right now, they just keep piling it up in them big heaps or try to mix it into roads or bricks. But it ain’t easy; nobody really wants coal waste sittin’ around.
So, that’s what a coal washery is all ’bout. It’s where they clean and sort all that coal so it’s ready for market, ready for makin’ electricity. Coal’s real important still, and as long as we got washeries, we can keep our power plants hummin’.
