What’s copper recovery all about?
Copper recovery means just that: recoverin’ the copper that’s left behind after they mine it. Now, they use a bunch of fancy methods to do this, but the simplest way to explain it is like this: after they mine the copper ore, it ain’t pure copper. Oh no, it’s got all kinds of other stuff mixed in—dirt, rocks, and other metals. So, they gotta figure out a way to separate the copper from all that junk and make it usable again.
One of the most common ways they do this is by flotation. Yup, that’s right, they float it! They add chemicals to the copper ore, and then they bubble air through the mix. The copper sticks to the bubbles, and the rest of the stuff stays behind. Then, they skim off the copper-covered bubbles, and bingo! That’s how you get copper concentrate.
But here’s the thing: that ain’t the end of the road. The copper still ain’t pure enough for us to use in most of them fancy gadgets. So, they gotta go through another process, called leaching. In leaching, they mix the copper concentrate with chemicals that help break it down even further. Why is copper recovery so important?

Challenges in copper recovery
