Now listen here, dear, let me tell ya ’bout how much gold gets pulled outta the ground each year. Ya might think it’s a lot, and well, it surely is, but don’t go thinkin’ it’s somethin’ easy to get. People all over the world, from Africa to South America, are diggin’ and diggin’ for that shiny stuff. They do it all year long, and the amount they pull out is more than you’d ever guess!
Gold mining, now, it’s somethin’ that’s been happenin’ for hundreds o’ years. You’d be surprised how much gold comes from the earth each year. From the year 2008, after the big ol’ financial mess, the amount o’ gold that gets dug up has been steadily goin’ up. Ain’t that somethin’?
In the year 2010, folks around the world dug up about 2,560 metric tons of gold. Now, that’s a big ol’ pile of gold. But from 2015 onward, they been gettin’ over 3,000 metric tons every single year. Ain’t nobody complainin’, cause that’s a lot of gold! That means, every year, the world’s gold production keeps on growin’.
It ain’t easy, mind ya. Mining for gold’s hard work, and it ain’t always safe neither. But with all the fancy machines and tools they got now, they can dig up more than ever before. A lot of this gold goes into making jewelry, which is somethin’ a lotta folks like to wear, especially in places like India and China. Half o’ the gold that gets pulled outta the ground ends up bein’ used in jewelry, so it sure does have a lotta value to folks.
Now, let me tell ya somethin’ important—there’s a lotta gold still in the ground. As of 2021, the folks at the World Gold Council reckon there’s about 50,000 metric tons just waitin’ to be dug up. These reserves are what they call “economically viable.” What that means is they can get the gold out without it costin’ ’em too much and still make a good profit. So, there’s still plenty o’ gold to be had if the price stays high and the technology keeps up.
But, how much gold has been mined since time began? Well, that’s a bit tricky to answer, cause nobody really knows for sure. But the World Gold Council, they’re smart folks, and they guess it’s around 190,040 tonnes. That’s a whole lotta gold, let me tell ya! And each year, we add another 2,500 to 3,000 metric tons to that total. That’s a lotta gold piling up, year after year, in places like the United States, Australia, China, and Russia.
So, what’s the big picture here? Well, the world keeps producin’ more and more gold every year, and it ain’t stoppin’ anytime soon. The price of gold might go up or down, but folks keep diggin’ it up. In fact, in 2023 alone, the United States produced about 160 metric tons o’ primary refinery gold. That’s a heap o’ gold right there!
But, like I said, it ain’t always easy. There’s still a lotta work to be done, and a lotta challenges to overcome. But for now, it looks like the gold just keeps comin’ outta the ground year after year. So next time you see someone wearin’ a fancy gold necklace or ring, just remember—there’s a lotta work that went into gettin’ that gold! And that’s a fact.
