And there’s always the worry of that mercury endin’ up in the water or the air, where it can hurt more folks than just the miners.

In the 1960s, some scientists in America started lookin’ at a way to separate mercury better, using some kinda fancy machine called a gas centrifuge. Now, I don’t know all the ins and outs of how it works, but I hear it’s like the same way they separate uranium for nuclear stuff. They heated up the mercury real hot and did some sort of spinning trick to separate it. That helped them get purer mercury and isolate it better, but it’s still a long way from perfect.

All in all, mercury and gold extraction’s a real tricky business. While it’s been used for a long time, it’s not the safest way to go about it. If we don’t figure out better ways to extract gold without mercury, well, it’s gonna keep bein’ a problem for both people and the planet.
