Well, now, let me tell ya about how zinc gets pulled outta the ground. You know, zinc’s one of them metals that folks been diggin’ for a long time, but it don’t come easy. Zinc’s used in all sorts of things, like makin’ galvanized steel, batteries, and even in some medicines, so it’s pretty important. But how do they get it outta the earth? Well, there’s a few ways to do it, and I’m gonna tell ya ‘bout ’em.
Open-pit mining is one of the most common ways. This here is when they dig up the earth, scoop away all the rocks and dirt that’s coverin’ the zinc ore, and then start pullin’ out the good stuff. Now, this method is mostly used when the zinc ore is close to the surface, kinda like when you find a few potatoes just under the dirt. They just get in there and take it out piece by piece. But let me tell ya, it ain’t all easy work. You gotta move a whole lotta dirt to get to the good zinc.
Then there’s underground mining, which is what they do when the zinc ore is deep down under the ground. This method’s used when the ore’s too far to reach with open-pit mining. What they do here is dig tunnels and shafts down into the earth, then work their way through the rock to find the zinc. It’s a lot like diggin’ a hole to get to a treasure chest, but trust me, it ain’t no fun job. Real dangerous work, too, with all them rocks overhead.
Cut and fill mining is another method. In this case, they start by diggin’ out a section of ore, then they fill the hole back up with waste rock and dirt to hold everything up, so it don’t cave in. After that, they go on and dig some more. It’s a long process, but they say it’s good for making sure the mine don’t collapse on ya. That’s one way they keep it safe.
Now, once they get the zinc ore outta the ground, the work ain’t over. They gotta process it to get the zinc out. First, they roast the ore in a big furnace at a real high temperature—about 950 degrees Celsius. That’s hot enough to get the zinc, sulfur, and iron all mixed up and turn into a gas. The zinc then gets separated from the rest of the stuff, and the good zinc is left behind.
But don’t think this whole process is without its problems. Zinc mining can cause all sorts of environmental messes. There’s a lotta waste rock and chemicals that get left behind, and that can end up in the water, in the soil, or even in the air. Some places, like down in southeastern Missouri, have seen a lotta damage from zinc mining, where fish and other critters get poisoned from all the zinc that leaks into the rivers.
All this mining takes a toll on the land, too. Sometimes, they end up messin’ up the land so bad that it ain’t good for much else. The soil gets contaminated, crops don’t grow like they should, and the water’s polluted. That’s why some folks are startin’ to look at better ways to do it, so we don’t ruin the earth too much.
Zinc’s not just found in one spot, though. It’s dug up in a lotta places all around the world. Some of the big places that mine zinc include Australia, China, Peru, and even the United States. It’s an important metal, so it gets pulled outta the ground in plenty of places to meet the world’s needs. In fact, in 2019, the world’s mines pulled out over 12 million tonnes of zinc. That’s a whole lotta zinc, if you ask me.
When it comes to zinc mining, it’s all about gettin’ to that precious ore, no matter what the method. Whether it’s open-pit mining, underground mining, or cut and fill mining, it’s a whole lotta hard work. And after all that diggin’, they still gotta process it and deal with the mess it makes. So while zinc’s real useful, we gotta be careful with how we take it from the earth, so we don’t end up hurtin’ the land or the critters that live on it.
