Well now, listen up, I’m gonna tell you how to make your own shake table. You know, one of them things that shakes like when the ground rumbles. It’s real simple, and you can do it with stuff you got around the house, so let’s get started!
What You Need:
- Cardboard shoebox
- Marbles or small balls
- Rubber bands
- Some toothpicks
- Marshmallows
- Scissors
- Tape
First off, you need a shoebox. You know, the kind your shoes come in. Make sure it’s empty, ‘cause we don’t want no shoes in our shake table! Now, take that shoebox and turn it upside down. We’re gonna make the bottom the top, you see?
Next, grab your marbles or small balls. You can use those to make the shaking happen. You’ll be putting them in the box later on. Now, get some rubber bands. You want them to be stretchy, like how my old bones feel sometimes!
Building the Shake Table:
Now, here’s the fun part. Take a couple of rubber bands and stretch them across the bottom of the shoebox. You want them to be nice and tight, like when I’m trying to keep my apron from falling off while cooking. This will be your shake mechanism!
Then, take your marbles and put them on top of the rubber bands. They’ll roll around when we shake it. Make sure they’re not too heavy or they’ll just sit there like a lazy cat.
Now, if you wanna test some building designs, you can use those toothpicks and marshmallows. Build little houses or towers, and make them nice and sturdy. Just like we used to build forts when I was young. Don’t make them too tall, though, or they might fall over like my old rooster!
Testing It Out:
Once you got your little structures built, place them gently on top of the marbles. Then, here comes the shaking part! Hold onto the shoebox and give it a good shake. Not too hard now, just like how you’d shake a jar of pickles. Watch how your buildings hold up! It’s like a mini earthquake right in your living room.
If they fall down, don’t worry! That just means you gotta rebuild ‘em stronger. It’s all part of the fun, just like making jelly preserves that don’t set right!
Why This Is Fun:
This shake table is not just for fun, you see. It helps you learn how buildings can handle earthquakes. Some buildings stand strong, and some don’t. It’s all about how you build ‘em. Just like how my grandkids build their sandcastles at the beach, some stay up, and some get washed away!
So, gather the kids and make it a little project. You can turn it into a contest to see whose building stays up the longest. You’ll all be laughing and having a good time, just like at a family reunion!
And remember, it don’t have to cost much. You might just spend a few pennies for some marshmallows or a shoebox if you don’t have one. Most of it you can find lying around, just like how I find pennies under the couch cushions!
Now, go on and make that shake table. You’ll have a blast shaking things up! And who knows, maybe you’ll invent the next big thing in building design right from your kitchen table!
